Always nice to chat with you, but yes, I do stand by the troll comment in the context of the opening post re a surveillance society. Any welcoming of "Big Brother" is trolling IMO.
"Are you kidding? No CCTV, no arrest - the predator still out there?"
As tacky a thing to say(I've never been accused of good taste),this particular murder you refer to is neither here nor there in relation to larger questions of civil liberties vis a vis "public safety" however that is construed. People get murdered on a pretty constant basis, 5.5ish(from memory) per 100000 per annum.Watch everyone all the time and will it drop? Perhaps it will but by how much and will it be worth it is the question. A fair question IMO,which is why I take issue with your assertion:
"..."Big Brother" is not always bad and not always an elitist conspiracy - there is often a focus on the negatives of these sorts of things, but let's also weigh up the positives of "surveillance" - today's result was surely a massive one." Massive in what way? As a matter of public order miscreants need to be apprehended but not at any cost, which is how we have traditionally understood democratic liberties.Do you want to throw away a thousand years of struggle for our current rights in order to feel a little safer(whether in fact you are or not, objectively)?
