I keep my holdings of HDR shares and CFD trading separate and my accountant is happy that the shares being held long-term are "investment" and will attract the lower CGT. You have to be clear in your intention and buy them with that purpose and ensure that the "investment shares" do not get included in "trading stock" at any stage (i.e. its not kosher to have them in trading stock then decide hey I've kept them more than 12 months so I'll now claim them to be investments.
