As Barrick gold is part of the topic i have to have a shot at them. I worked at Plutonic for 5 years as an underground supervisor. In that time i was asked on many occasions if i knew of any gold areas that they had missed. I am just a supervisor but have a real interest in geology,young engineers & geologists used to come to me for advice which was always freely given. I really liked my job there & the people i worked with. I found Barrick between 30 & 50 Thousand ounces of gold which would have been missed never to be recoverd. A new management team came in whos egos were bigger than the job. We were told downsizing and loss of jobs would occur. This was understandable as many of the main areas had been mined out. On fly out day i was called on the radio to come up to the surface & see the planning engineers. I sat down with them for 2 hours with all of the mine plans, having been asked to show the other areas that they had missed. When the meeting was over & 30 minutes to catch the bus to fly out , i was then called into the office & told my services were no longer required.Steal my knowledge and make themselves look good. What suprised me was the quality of people they got rid of and i am not including myself & the absolute rubbish they kept. I learnt a lesson, take the new boss fishing on your nice boat even though you had to have other people cover your backside because you wernt even close to doing your job or another supervisor threaten the young workforce to take risks that shouldnt happen to make himself look good A lot of the industry is going the same way including Newcrest. Experience and old school counts for very little today, once you have a Uni degree you know it all. Sorry have rambled on and am still bitter, but really did like my job.
