    just as an idea of where I think Australia should head:

    Its an extension of the research done by the canadians who came up with the CANDU reactor (impossible to meltdown, uses 10x less enriched Uranium 235 and is smaller than a football field)

    they have now invented another safe reactor which has another great feature the CANDU cannot even claim, the biproduct is not weapons grade.

    The PBMR reactor cannot meltdown (due to the stabilised nature of the reaction using He as a transfer fluid, rather than water), for 1100MW it would only take up 3 football fields (roughly 300x100m), it doesnt use a dangerous fuel (using graphite coated uranium which is insanely safe) and it can be refuelled while operating!

    the waste is also easy to store and the cooling fluid (helium) is inert and non-corrosive..
