gilded, Abbott's performance as leader of the lib's for last 4 years has given us a great insight into his potential as an alternative PM. Unfortunatly for Abbott he has not demonstarted he is a creditable alternative, far from it he has demonstarted and even addmitted that not every thing he say can be taken as gospel.

Given that Abbott is so unpopular and yes people are not happy with gillard, if these two are leading at the next election I expect a huge surge in informal votes and votes to minor parties.

I don't expect Abbott will be leading at the next election, the Lib's are well aware of how unpopular Abbott is and they would not want to risk losing the unloseable election.
