Hi westmoon,
In relatively deep water like Mauritania,
the deviated well is more likely due to
geo concerns, like approaching a fault
squarely, rather than shallow gas.
(In the event of a blowout in deep water,
the chances of a catastrophe are much
less, as currents tend to move the gas
away from the rig, before it reaches the surface.)

But, you are quite correct about ships not
floating on gas ..... bearing testament to
that, is one D/S "Viking Explorer" lying on
the bottom, off the east coast of
Kalimantan, Indonesia .....
...... truly, some amazing stories of bravery
by crew-members, as a comedy of errors
unfolded, in such a devastating emergency.
Jackups too have also foundered off
Indonesia, where shallow gas has blown
out under the supporting mat, capsizing
the rig.
Lots of stories like that emanate from the
oilfields to our north .....
happy days
