What you say about leCarre is true OliveOyl. A novellist paints a verbal impressionist picture and not being politically trained he leaves loose ends that can be picked at. It's a bit like one of Churchill's orations - emotively powerful but flawed in analysis.
The stuff that SunnyJim dredged up is also full of unsubstantiated assumptions and unchallenged beliefs, but without the power of leCarre.
