An additional thing I recall Phil saying, was that he did not believe that the technology was patentable (probably the real reason why it never was) and its not even really a black box operation. Its just a metallurgical process that has been tweaked and made to suit our purposes. He did not see a problem with others being able to steal the process, as anyone doing so would have to go through all the hassle, which takes years and millions of dollars.
The extent to which we were mislead is amazing sometimes.
