Hoping for a more suitable and knowledgable background than mine (pardon the pun) to clarify further, but it really is a case of each deposit having it's own particularities, some of big impact, some of small, that all feed into the attractiveness of the resource and by extension, its profitability.
This is the purpose of the detailed feasiblity study - to really get into the nitty-gritty of the "costs of doing business" from the mine with the outlined deposit.
As far as the ore goes, obviously of major impact is the amount, and the purity/quality of the ore. Strip ratio is a big thing - the amount of useless rock to ore.
Other considerations dealt with in the FS are location of ore at the site (spread out over a wide area in lower grades (ZRL) or concentrated in a "block" (hopefully RDM), access to transport and power, recoverability via metallurgy of the key desired metals and on and on.
