Sundance Resources chairman George Jones is in discussions with the State Government to build a memorial in Kalgoorlie-Boulder to honour his former colleagues who died in the 2010 Republic of Congo plane crash.
Speaking at a mining lunch yesterday to honour St Barbara's Day - a day used to recognise those who have died while working in the industry - Mr Jones said after the original plan to build a memorial in Kings Park was knocked back by the park's board, he set his sights on a monument at the home of WA mining.
He said early discussions with Mines Minister Norman Moore indicated it could be part of a broader memorial to honour all miners who had died at work. Mr Jones said although he hated the thought, he knew a crash such as the 2010 tragedy would once again hit the WA mining community.
"It could happen anywhere," he said. "And I have no doubt, regrettably, that it will happen again."
