    If l told you verbally l was buying something for .50 cents, that would infer half of one cent. But when we refer to monetary values represented in text, a decimal placing always denotes a dollar value. Of course 5¢ doesn't equal $5. But $0.05 and 0.05¢ are the same.

    This discussion isn't just about mathematics, it's about the correct syntax used when addressing currency and how the market uses the correct syntax of which is utilised by the vast majority of international 'dollar' currencies.

    Generally it is denoting the left side as dollar units, the right side as cents units. This is why the dollar sign usually is used as a prefix and the cents as a suffix.

    I didn't want to spend my Friday evening banging on about currency and decimals, I may as well still be at work, but some of the mind-numbing responses l have read warranted some reply. In fairness to Marco, he isn't the first to think along those lines, but a closed mind can be very restrictive.
