Hi NT84,
Not sure if schools stopped trying to extend student vocabulary since 1984 but the word sarcasm is a noun meaning 'ironic language' and sarcastic is an adjective which describes the way a phrase is worded. Might I suggest that when a HC member suggests a $1 party within the next 88 years (hence "end of the century") he/she is being sarcastic.
