GZ the TD42 is widely understood as one of the most reliable long lived engines ever made, it's old school made tough to last so it does sacrifice performance and economy for longevity.

I million km can be obtained and I have seen a couple inside at around 600k km that could have been buttoned straight back up to go another 400k with fair odds of getting there. Owners thought it's time to do a basic refresh but in the end just spent money early. 170 k km is only just ran in...serious they unless abused early or overheated start to loosen up and spin freely and get the best economy somewhere past 200k km

Just for best case don't (EVER) overheat it or over fuel and change oil religiously with a quality diesel oil not the average junk (relatively speaking) on super cheap et al shelves

    Dello 400 is a good one....2 fills for 100$ (20L can)

The drive train is light truck...comparing side by side a 4.2 patrol against a same year cruiser...the cruiser running gear diffs/axles/Gb one would swear came out of a passenger car.

But the patrols have had their day...forever now to be slightly butcher than the average Pajero etc soft roader into the future...they will be comfortable and fast but to get there and back again becomes a bigger gamble not worth taking if truly offroad.... the new extra soft engined version (a Renault engine i think) is also doing away with the rail chassis.

Anyway it will be sad but it will have better brakes, quieter, faster, corner better it just will not be a very good 4wd except in name like all the other modern softies.
