Chookman.....that engine got the not appealing nickname of "the grenade"...have personally seen 10s of patrols with the 3L engine selling engineless because of the outrageous cost of repair.
This lead to secondhand TD42 engines becoming rare and costly as many would only replace the engine with the TD42.
It was a scandle that Nissan would like forgotten, people if they pushed hard enough where getting engines replaced after warrenty was up because of the huge amount of evidence on the net of other peoples never ending blowups.....up until the time I lost interest in following closely...about 3 years ago Nissan to try and 'fix' the problem shortened the dipstick (I kid you not) so sump oil level was higher. They did something else too, oil sprayers possibly...forget...but it was largely a hopeless attempt.
Anyway if one of those engines made it past 170k back then.......the person had their fingers crossed.
Another problem was the rubberized 2 part flywheel.....they did not last and will be expensive to fix.
Given that Nissan for 4 years now has promised a completely new power plant I have little faith they resigned the 3l to take the punishment...far cheaper just to deal with it at their customers disadvantage.
Smart owners have got all of it's shortcoming covered with after-market gear and engineering...way ahead of Nissan, the 3L once the backyard mods are done becomes reasonably reliable...errant unexpected over boosting was found by the backyarders to be behind much of the blowups.
Bottom line is if Nissan is fixing it rest assured they have seen the identical problem so many times before, the fuel rails also I understand where a problem.....just grin and bear it and don't if under warranty take any guff...expect them to pay for everything absolutely everything....search the net for your engine...use the word grenade in the search.
Try patrol 4x4 forum and outerlimits patrol forum for any fully up to date information....great places to search and ask questions and they will talk completely straight...hard core fourby owners have that in common aust wide.
Good luck with it and IMO only - once out of warranty better to sell than take the risk unless things have changed from new which I don't think they have or alternatively get all the mods get done....never own an older still stock 3L.
