    Towie,

This has little to do with the war in Iraq. When you "read" the general context you know it has more to do with getting Howard on any pretext.

    Land rights,refugees,GST etc,etc they've all been tried.

I think it was Olive who mentioned the fact that Hawke sent troops to the last stouch against Iraq presumably at the request of the other Bush. (don't remember many squawks then).

Aussie ships have been patrolling the Persian Gulf and assisting in maintaining the no fly zone for years. Ships have been departing and returning to Australia at regular periods. There of course is more significance at this time.

There seems to be some evidence out there that some if not all of the Middle East countries would like to see Saddam removed from power as they fear his territorial ambitions. Despite the rhetoric from them, for home consumption, they know that the US stands between them and a megalomaniac with grandiose ambitions for the Middle East.

Just reflect on the assistance the US has in terms of logistic support in and from the region. These are the Arab countries our opponents claim will rise up against the West.

The anti US clique was making the same foolish comments about Afghanistan. The only thing you can say about them is that they are very slow learners.

As far as France and Germany are concerned look at
history it took Great Britain and the US to save France and the rest of Europe from the rule of facism.

Russia made a pact with Hitler and was forced onto the side of the allies when Hitler's Germany turned on it.

These nations along with our own have a consistent history of fighting other nations battles for them and in the case of Germany and Japan helping to rebuild their political and economic structures after defeating them.

That's the reason I find it hard to take seriously those who claim to have compassion for other nations, when they are totally indifferent to the present suffering of those under such a regime as exists in Iraq today. It's a matter of credibility. In my view that is on the side of the US and GB.

I think we have a great nation and political system and believe that is true whether we have a Conservative or Labor government in Canberra. That's why I treat partisan politics with the contempt it deserves.

When we start a thread with what a little...PM.. we have I responded in the most appropriate way by mocking the utter irrelevance of such statements.

I know the writer was using physical stature as a metaphor but the metaphor could just as easily be turned back on the author, or any of us for that matter. A prejudiced opinion is no argument, nor is it a basis for rational debate.

    regards lrj.

    Magpies? oh no.
