For a very long while concern at disposal of radioactive waste has been psychological, emotional and political rather than scientific.
Well put.
There are more than enough safe, practical ways to dispose of radio-active waste. We just allow doomsayers to rule us.
One way that has crossed my mind is to buy a deep, old gold mine in S Africa such as that owned by DRD. They are now so deep that the temperature is deadly and it needs expensive air-conditioning to keep operating. These mines are barely profitable. How much would you need to offer to buy that bluddy great hole in the ground? Any spent fuel rods buried there would be much deeper than they were when they were raw U308.
