I don't get too excited over the shorts - some investors short to lock in gains and ,at the same time, delay any tax/capital gains to be paid.
For example, if you held 50K shares and needed to wait till Feb before you sold (for tax reasons).
All you do is you short 50K shares today. This locks in your profit because when you sell both (shares & short) in Feb your profit will be the same as today.
