we live in a "wide brown land" with scant populations hundreds of km apart.
That is precisely why our transport infrastructure should be based on "service to major centres " which in turn are serviced by local transport.
These days with technology at hand transhipment can be very efficient so that is no barrier.
The real barriers are human ones.
