A TEEN who smashed the windscreen of a police car and attacked a TV crew member during violent Muslim protests in Sydney last year has apologised in court today for bringing the Islamic community into disrepute with his "stupid and reckless’’ actions.

Omar Halaby, 19, pleaded guilty to destroying the window with a milk crate and pushing a Channel 10 staff member during angry scenes in the CBD last September.

The local protest followed fiery outbursts overseas when a video mocking Islam and the prophet Mohammed was posted on YouTube.

Downing Centre Local Court was today told that Halaby, who was on the disability pension and had "literacy issues’’, was sorry for his crimes and had paid the police compensation for the broken window.

Magistrate Pat O’Shane said she expected Halaby had already been counselled within his own community and praised Islamic leaders for condemning the violent protests.

"Would that more could show that (restraint), otherwise they seem to generate more and more hostility and division in the community,’’ she said.

Ms O’Shane handed Halaby a 12-month good behaviour bond after noting his clean criminal record and accepting his remorse.

The 19-year-old was one of several men charged following the protests, which drew up to 1000 people before sections of the crowd turned violent.

Police were struck with water bottles, rocks and pieces of timber during the melee, and several officers were injured.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard previously said violence and inflammatory slogans seen during the protests were inexcusable and "not the Australian way’’.
