Sadly for mainstream Australians there are indeed many parallels!
Our colonial era, adversarial, monarchical system of government denies mainstream Australians the right not only to directly elect their leaders of choice but even at the local level; candidates to stand for election.
One needs reference to nothing more than Julia Gillard's replacement of Kevin Rudd, Clive Palmer's inglorious exit from the Liberal Party and Campbell Newman's 'annointment' from outside the parliamentary party to realise just how sickenly self-serving and inbred our political system really IS.
Only major reform of our fraudulent and fundamentally flawed Constitution from the ground up will resolve such disgusting distortions.
Neither Julia Gillard nor Tony Abbott can offer any hope in this regard; both are entrenched parts of the inbred quagmire. We deserve better choices and it's tragic that our myopic MPs have made such decisions on our behalf.
