cerhob, I know the our ties to the Monarchy are archaic, and in time the Union Jack will have to go. There is so much under the bridge since I voted NO in '99, and though I reckon Liz is a grand old lady, our real ties are to David Cameron, nee Tony Blair, lol. But if we remove the Union Jack, the influence of Cameron will still prevail in determining our geo-strategic directions, wont it? With a bit of help from Obama.
So, if we remove the Union Jack what can we replace it with? I will strongly resist an image of a Rangi riding a kangaroo into an Aboriginal sunset, even if the backdrop is the Southern Cross. A flag is meant to inspire and rally around, not to be an abstract work of art.
