I reckon the possums would not bother walking along the ground....they walk along the telephone wires, onto your roof, and barely a skip across to the tree

just going by how close the tree is to the roof

maybe you can try the large plastic spikes if you have a problem again
one would have to be careful with 40,000 volts, with yourself or visitors in the yard , or not ?
