The NVG ground seems more prospective for shale gas. The govt studies seem to agree, concluding that the ground deserves more research. A few privates and the govt went over the Arckaringa in the 60s/70s (due to fears of an oil shortage) and concluded the rocks were immature... I mean that's a full stop right there as to the potential of that ground.

That's not to say that NVG ground is good, personally I wouldn't spend the millions required to find the bits of the Arrowie that may contain rich source rock. And then of course there's the business of finding the necessary capital to develop the field. With the offshore gas fields of WA/NT, Mozambique, West Africa, CSG in Qld, Shale gas in North America, the emerging shale plays in South America... I tend to think that the source rock will have to be high calibre to warrant development at this point in time.
