omgwen, to find deadwood (Totholz) in swamps and along the branches of big rivers with low stream velocity is quite natural. In Germany along the old branches of river Rhine dead wood trees are used by huge populations of cormorants for fishing.
Look for Totholz in the subscript of pictures taken by anglers (river Rhine):
