Reaper, my take is that Abbott's mini election campaign is the lib's giving him his last chance to improve his image and show that he can lead to an election win as at the moment it looks shaky.
I don't think it will work for Abbott and in the next few week he will be asked to step aside, that would give Turnbull plenty of time. Thou Turnbull being so popular I think he could turn the lib's fortunes even at much shorter time frame.
This would be simluar to when Hawke to over from Hayden and took labor to a landslide victory
