Looks like the english have had enough of being the soft touch for illegal immigrants claiming asylum.

    MARK STEVENSON

THE Sun’s asylum crusade went to Downing Street yesterday — to deliver TWELVE bulging sackloads of mail demanding an end to the immigration madness.

We took The Sun bus to No10 as an incredible 230,000 readers called for Britain to stop being a soft touch — and Tony Blair admitted the crisis has become “unacceptable”.

Mountains of post urging the PM to clamp down on illegal immigration have been flooding into our HQ in Wapping, East London, since we launched the campaign last week.

Each envelope — marked Stop the Asylum Madness — contained a signed coupon like the one at the bottom of the page.

They came from all over the country and even from ex-pat Brits living in places as far apart as America, Spain and New Zealand.

Reporters Tom Worden and Mark Stevenson and Sun bus driver Mickey King carried the sacks past Downing Street security checks.

We plastered them with Sun stickers to make sure they grabbed Mr Blair’s attention and handed them over to a security officer at 11am.

The Sun bus got rolling after Mr Blair was grilled about the asylum chaos on TV and vowed to push through new measures to stem the flow of illegals.

These included taking away asylum seekers’ automatic right to benefits and extending British immigration officers working in French ports to other countries.

Mr Blair warned that if these steps failed to work he would consider even tougher ones “including fundamentally looking at the obligations we have under the Convention on Human Rights”.

But critics dismissed his pledges as too little, too late as backing for The Sun’s crusade intensified.

Many coupons were accompanied by notes saying why readers believe Britain is being ripped off.

Some envelopes were stuffed with several coupons signed by entire families, crowds of friends and even whole offices.

Tony Wheelan, from Stevenage, Herts, wrote: “Thank God someone is finally standing firm against bogus asylum seekers. We have been a soft touch for far too long.”

And Julie Leadley, from Liverpool, wrote: “It is time for Mr Blair to listen to the people. Enough is enough.”

At Downing Street passer-by Tim Winchester, 43, said: “If something isn’t done this country will go into meltdown. Good luck to The Sun for trying to stop this madness.”

Salesman Tim, from Oxford, added: “With the murder of Stephen Oake and ricin discoveries, it proves that some asylum seekers are intent on hurting us.”

Retired plumber Michael Ryder, 65, of Streatham, South London, said: “The fact so many people have written in shows the depth of feeling about this.

“It makes my blood boil that people who have no right to be here are living on my money.”

A Downing Street spokesman said: “The Prime Minister has said today this is a real and serious issue that we are taking tough measures over.

“He has sent a message that if those measures do not work he will not shy away from tough decisions.”
