"$250k for a 3 bedder in the burbs is too expensive????"
That doesn't exist in Sydney. $600,000 will buy you a seething dump on a main rd 20 km from the city.
In my parents day, they could buy a very respectable 3 bedder in a very respectable suburb for about 3X the average wage. Now these same areas have medians of around 1 million, or probably 15X the average wage.
Sure you can go way out and spend that couple of hours extra time away from the family sitting in a row of cars on a tollway, stressed out by the stop start. What a way to spend 15% of your waking life.
