    dbl, what do you mean qantas "was" an australian icon? imo, it still is. i have nothing but respect and admiration for the employees of qantas, but as i said in my initial post, "i don't like to see people lose their jobs, but if the emirates tie-up is going to be good for qan, especially for their international division, then wield the axe i say". maybe "wield the axe" was a poor choice of words, but qantas is no longer the government owned international airline of australia, it's now a publicly listed company that has to make a profit to stay in business.

    the emirates tie-up must be what's best for the future of the company. why else would qantas management be pursuing it?
