An equally confounding question was put a while ago by a poster whose nic I cannot recall - perhaps he/she will reveal the post sgain...
If you were a German citizen during those years, how could you just ignore what was going on? How could you just get on with life as if nothing was happening?
Maybe it has the same answer, apart from inertia, fear, etc - "They expected the worst – they did not expect the unthinkable"
