Hingdog, you are correct about the issue with a large number of people having cordless phones and their inability to be used without power.
We keep a corded phone in the cupboard in case of power failures for that exact reason. (We have power failures at least twice a year.)

boatboy, equipment failure no matter if it is the NBN or copper lines will result in not being able to make phone calls.

It is hard to know if the radio caller's information was accurate or not, but I would not rely on a single phone call to a radio station.

A Google search failed to find any similar stories about battery failure.

A google search found some alternatives powering methods if your concerned about battery failure, a solar panel and a UPS that is software monitored, etc.

Both political parties, Labor and Liberals support upgrading our fixed line communications network to fibre, (FTTN, FTTH, Satellite, Wireless, Labor) (FTTN, Satellite, Wireless, Liberals).

Key industry players, businesses, service providers, state governments, local governments, etc. also support upgrading our fixed line communications network to fibre.

So have the above got it wrong?

darryle if you read the NBN Corporate Plan 2012–15 it may help in the accuracy of your calculations, (link below).
