The initial free option for the NBN is for a connection point to your home, you do not have to connect or use that connection point once installed. If you opt out of having the connection point installed during the roll out, and change your mind down the track, you will have to pay for the connection point yourself to be installed. There is no reason to opt out of installing a connection point during the roll out. Though I'm sure some will.
I use Telstra wireless Internet when we loose power and when traveling, with mixed success.
