mopom, old sausage, you havent stated whether your friend was licenced to drive at the time of the incident, or whether you had "reason to believe" he or she was licenced.
This is, imo, very relevent to any support from your insurer, and the copper you spoke to was being simplistic if he did not raise the issue.
