Just because everyone has fallen off the cliff, they can at least try to form some kind of impromptu scarf parachute. They might work together, enjoy communicating, fail and die. They might also be selfish, not put their scarf in, fly off by themselves, do some flips and then die. Everyone 'might' die, but the selfish one 'will' die.
You're probably right about 'recycling/growing your own food etc'. I'm talking high level research and technology here, not milk cartons and gardens. (Though I do recycle because its easy, and grow my own food for enjoyment)
