few comment on that article:
- yup, the intentions are there and good (and love that they are donating to CFA) but:
"From Saturday, March 23, IGA customers will be charged 10 cents for a plastic bag.
Ms Farrugia said the supermarket had sourced plastic bags that would completely decompose in about four years."
4 YEARS to decompose ?????
Must be a "first generation" product being off-loaded. Cardia Bags would do that in a much shorter time frame .............
In EU the drive to eliminate conventional bags has been on for over a decade; Germany has been charging for plastic bags for a looooooong time : anything form 10 euro cents to 50 euro cents, depending on store and if it is "bio-degradable" - and even over there their "bio bags" have come under scrutiny as not all comply to German composting standards and can't be put through their recycling methods.
So a lot of eduction still needs to be done - for consumers and retailers that wish to tackle the problem in a "sensible" way.
As with a lot of things "read label with care" - and just because it says "evironmentally friendly" doesn't nec. work out to be good for the environment.
In the end it is up to us consumers to approach the big boys like Woolies and Coles and demand we are given Cardia bags - for the good of the planet !
I happily pay for them too (on the days I forget my cotton shopping bags at home) !!!!!!!!
PS: try getting a free bag out of ALDI - LOL
