That is the whole idea. Since everybody is holding a lot of the "reserve currency", nobody wants to see it turn into a pile of useless paper.

Unless and until there is another currency to replace the almighty USD, it will continue to be the reserve currency. The Euro was a contender but the current problems in the Eurozone, it will be a long, long, long, long time before it can.

And no, gold is not a currency.
