1. We live in a democracy - why single out new Australians? As an old Australian I'm glad no one is spying on me to make sure I am following someone else's idea of what is the Australian way of life (whatever that means).
Appears you missed the whole point of his comment. Thought his example made it clear. When his parents cam to Australia as Russian immigrants, they didn't enforce communist beliefs, they learnt the Australian culture and learnt to become Australians. I presume people come to Australia for a better life. You have to give up something to get something. If you can't stand the Australian culture then you shouldn't come to Australia. If I were to go and live in another country I don't expect them to change their ways to fit in with my Australian beleifs.
Of course it's all a bit more complex than that but there should be an enforced policy on new Australians to learn English and understand and embrace the Australian culture. Otherwise there is no real hope for multiculturism in Australia.
