The first preliminary phase of a geological map of Angola, focusing on the northeast of the country and indicating the existence of alluvial and kimberlitic diamonds, has been concluded, the principal advisor to the chairman of Russian group Alrosa said Tuesday in Luanda.

During a presentation of the geological and mining survey to create a geo-physical and mineralogical map of Angola’s diamond areas, Sergei Mitnhkin said that the work, which began in May 2011, had made it possible to infer the existence of as yet undiscovered kimberlitic deposits.

“In the surveyed area HALF of the kimberlitic deposits had not yet been discovered,” he said.

The HEAD of the department of finds with geological potential in Alrosa’s new territories, Victor Ustinov, also said that there were kimberlitic deposits in southeast Angola and added that Alrosa was still collecting geophysical data as part of its cooperation agreement with Angola state diamond mining company Endiama.

According to Ustinov, this first stage included a geophysical survey of Angola and the distribution of areas of kimberlitic and alluvial deposits and he added that the potential for undiscovered diamond deposits was very high. (macauhub)

Clifford Elphick, Gem Diamonds’ CEO reported that the first Letšeng tender in 2013 saw 16,188 carats of rough selling ?for $27.9 million, or $1,723 per carat. Despite the lower average price (than 2012), he noted that the ?results were encouraging given the sale was comprised entirely of production from the lower-value pipe. “The outlook for the diamond industry is showing signs of improvement,” ?Elphick added.
