My point is why are we spending tens of billions on a warplane that may be a dud? For the buffs...

The JSF was apparently smoked by the Russian warplanes such as the SU-35s which cost about $50 million each, at least three times less than the F-35s.
You can't teach the Russians much about warplanes. In WWII the topline German warplanes were shot up badly by the YAKs.
They've come a long way since then. Maybe they don't have all the bells & whistles.
At the very least, we should buy Russian warplanes such as the PAKFA (T-50), being built with the Indians for delivery in 2015/16 just in case the JSFs are duds. At this rate, PAKFAs will be flying before the JSFs are more than a thought.
Maybe throw in a few Eurofighters too, and a squadron of Chinese ones if they're any good (they're big enough, a bit like Chinese F1-11s).
With our Super Hornets (FA-18s) we'd have the best in the world, & it would be up to our pilots & commanders after that.
Why just buy 70 American unproven warplanes?
Are we just their colony?
