    According to the document, it is both a "lost hole @5426'" and a "dry hole"

    Both designations make sense if you consider that the drilling team met operational difficulties 5426 feet underground (thus the 'lost hole' designation) and, since those operational difficulties and the tragedy that attended them ultimately caused the well to be plugged, it did not yield any oil (thus the 'dry hole' designation)

    doesn't mean there ain't no oil down there, just means we ain't gettin it with this hole (at least not at this time)

    that's the only way the whole document makes sense to me
