The Germans started WW1 and they lost, but only aftwer millions had been killed.

If only Hitler had been smart enough to learn the lessons of that war, they would not have been so stupid and arrogant as to start another one.And if they had been really smart, they would have learnt a lesson from French history and not invaded Russia, or at least, not until they had defeated Great Britain.
