AQ wasn't a state backed terror group. Saudi Arabia certainly wasnt affiliated with the group that's for sure because the regime eventually exiled him for continual ridicule in respect to their foreign policy with the US. 10 years before the 9/11 attacks mind you.
So there was no fundamental logic or reasoning to attack Saudi Arabia. If a rebel group originated in Australia and attacked the US does that mean by default the US should invade Australia? Crazy??
Afghanistan was the obvious hit. That regime housed and accommodated the terror group.
