I've watched a number of young men successfully defend themselves against an aggressor only to have the police charge them. You see, if you happen to be capable enough to put the bad guy down, you will almost certainly be charged.
Out legal system looks at the loser as the victim. The legal system seems incapable of seeing it otherwise.
So yes, as groundzero says, avoid confrontation at all costs. The law will not help you, sad to say.
