Danz2010, just thought I'd have a little waffle.

The greens are running a scare campaign against Mantle at Mirboo as they know Mantle is a player on the BC scene in Vic however I think they have it wrong.

Talk of an open cut mine at Mirboo sounds off the mark to me. My thoughts are that if anything mantle will be targeting deep black coal seams in that area, for either underground mining or possibly for underground gasification(different to CSG without fracking) and then possibly as reservoirs for CO2 sequestration. That is my guess.

These would be very low impact compared to open cut mining and can likely co-exist with all that already happens in the area.

I lived in a place called Helensburgh where we had a long term(100yrs +) underground black coal operation and we co-existed right in the township and I was astounded to find that often new people who had moved to town didn't even realise there was an operating underground coal mine still functioning. It consisted of a hole in the side of a hill and a couple of hundred sq metres of infrastructure with a rail line passing by.

Helensburgh is on the fringe of The Royal National Park and is closer to Sydney City than Bacchus Marsh or Mirboo are to Melbourne. Unless you were told, you wouldn't know there was a mine in the town and even driving past the main gate to the mine all you can see is beautiful thick forest.

Helensburgh is/was a very prosperous town for the younger folk in the 90's when I was there due to the money they made in the mines.
