A "knee operation" could be anything as simple as a meniscectomy to something quite invasive like a knee replacement or knee reconstruction. Most arthoscopic meniscectomies require a couple of weeks physio then are fine. But even with this type of operation, one has to take into account the extent of the damage, pre-existing conditions such as osteoarthritis, co-existing conditions such as ligament rupture or partial tear, etc., and whether the cartilage is repaired or trimmed (big difference in rehab time). Common complications are infection, post-operative bleeding....but these are pretty rare. If you live in Melb., I know a few good ortho surgeons,. Lay people rarely have much idea what's involved so don't take advice from ppl in here!!
