irrelevant I disagree. "Intent" is most important, for it changes the emotion of a word.
If someone paid you a compliment, but you knew that it was not intended, for it was sarcastically spoken .
then the meaning, the message, has changed from being complementary to spiteful.
I have a gun, is my intent what I do with it important. Of cause it is. Gun, word all depends on intent.
People can get the wrong message from a written post, for they can't see the body language to know their intent.
Intent, not the word uttered is what can be offensive.
A word is just a word, until there is feeling attached.
