I guess I should expect of hotcopper - fast & loose with the arguments and what is considered evidence in the biotech space. The cheer-squad nature of hotcopper concerns me sometimes - what is the evidence? The latest marketing material isn't sufficient. Nor the infective hype.
That said - I accept that there is quite reasonable secondary evidence to base an assumption of value on (just one bit I've seen - that USDA is funding a small study). Having looked a little wider (including the US Vit D study + further in-vain look for any results from the MMA study) - I still find no primary evidence of increased efficacy over existing known dietary supplements & delivery mechanisms.
I'm well aware of more reliable absorption by methods bypassing the digestive system. Of which TPM is one such method. Such delivery better controls delivered dose & avoids issues with absorption in the intestine & somewhat in issues with the liver getting rid of a drug too early. Doesn't make it a magic cure! Needs to be delivering something that really works - and works across multiple breeds of dairy cattle.
I remain surprised at the lack of scientific evidence from both POH & MMA for this area. The MMA website is big on publicity statements, the closest it goes to evidence is a blurry graph of reduction in SCC. No link to study outcomes. No papers. No conference presentations. No information on the components of the preparation used. No scientific review. *really unusual*
Do note - the USDA is trialling both a TPM+Vit-D and the TPM+something preparation used by MMA (what that is still seems unclear - certainly haven't seen it mentioned in this thread). The specific Vit-D compound used is listed here:
http://ars.usda.gov/is/pr/2012/120618.htm
Not really a derivative - a "natural form of vitamin D"
I'm sure USDA testing will be somewhat more rigorous than the previous study. Hopefully it will immediately include comparison to other current methods of control.
I bought in recently because of their pain products more than anything. In that I see solid value in a known market. Share price has dropped over the year even though there is now more opportunity and less risk, so looked like a good time.
