"Also, before you sling off at me for being racist, I have QUARTER BLACK grand-kids and nephew and neices as well. (which are great kids and love them dearly). It's up to the parents to give their kids the necessary self esteem, whether you're black, white or in between, and to educate their children that if people look down on them for any reason, it's not their problem but a problem for the other person."

This won't work - part of the human condition and physiological realities indicate that we all to some extent see ourselves as what others see us.

If a significant portion of society see us as inferior, undesirable and unwanted, for example - then by virtue of being human beings we have to at least acknowledge that. We can't just shrug it off, or 'choose' not to be affected by it. If you can choose to turn it off, and somehow can exist independent of what society thinks of you, that may be even more unhealthy than being in-sync with the rest of society.

I'm not a racist and I'm not one of those folks who either consciously or subconsciously equate dark skin with troublemaker, criminal or any sort of that rubbish. But I'm just suggesting a significant portion of society does and your grandkids will be affected by it, whether they choose to or not.

What people can 'choose' to change though, is their racist thoughts. Or, if that can't be done then at least don't use racial slurs which invoke those racist ideas.

It's much more productive to change wrong and contemptuous thinking than to let them stand and have the victims change their attitudes.
