In our case (probably like many others) home ownership is not about the monetary investment but the family investment - We cant live in a share portfolio!
When you purchase a home and pay your mortgage, no one will boot you out (other than your missus) - when you rent, it will be temporary until the owner finds a better use for their money or gets greedy and wants more and then you have the issues of looking in same area for schooling , friends etc.
Our view - own your home, do your own reno's and maintenance as much as you can and everything else will fall into place.
Home ownership is contentment and having to paint hose bloody gutters again LOL, but it's all good.
