In reply to the original post Yurt. The suggestion that you cant find a job as a geologist at the moment is not true but it is definitely harder now than it has been in the past.
The problem is not that there are too many geologists out there but rather that there are too many people who have gotten into the industry with no interest in geology for the allure of money and the promise of being paid a high salary to nothing.
IMO what is happening is good as it cuts out a lot of dead wood out of the industry. Five years ago there were people working in the industry who majored in philosophy and did 2-3 geology subjects and got geo jobs. This had to stop at some time.
The point being if you are truly passionate about what you do employers will be able to see that ( unless you go to an interview with some HR idiot that asks you questions along the lines of "describe a time in your life bla bla bla").
My tips would be if you are still at Uni is to get involved with the lecturers that have a lot to do with the industry so leave the pure tectonics guys to shooting zircons and gain the respect of your economic geology professors as having them as reference can go a long way.
Furthermore the possibility of getting an easy 8-6 FIFO roster is getting harder and harder so you might have to move to one of the many crappy mining towns around Australia to get some experience before moving onto a job you will like more.
All in all it will be a hard slog but it is possible.
As a last point when you do get a job save your money with a constant view in mind that you will be unemployed for a period of time in your career. I know heaps of guys that got highly paid jobs and as soon as they did got 500k worth of dept in club sports, speedboats and 400 square meter houses.
Good Luck
