But your last point is very relevant. With around thirty major religions (including atheism) and their variants all insisting that they are the only way - logically they are all wrong.
Organised religion is a curse in itself. For most of us, we'll only find out for ourselves when we die. I think all those who have (I was going to say "nailed their colours to a tree" but ....) given their lives to one faith or another will be in for a surprise. A pleasant one though, unless they take bitterness against competing faiths with them.
